I am really disappointed that some people in this world takes such advantage to do FREE ADVERTISING and DATA COLLECTION.
Who am I referring?
Andrew & Michelle's "Save the Poodle" Mission

This page was setup last week, after the huge commotion of the Abused Poodle Video surface on Internet. This page did not have a description on it's purpose, but from the title it's to save the poodle which means hopefully find it and save it from anymore further abuse..
So as a concern being, I JOIN the page and hope there is other information that would be shared by users.
But soon, a headline struck. The admin on that page left a message "We have found the perfect person to talk to, we will be engaging a P.I" (may not be exact as original but the meaning is like this). And wow! I thought! Getting a P.I go hunt for the couple is SUCH AND INGENIOUS THING TO DO!

But after which, I saw this Headline on my feeds in the morning on SUNDAY via mobile..
I first saw this.. and I was REALLY REALLY IN DOUBT!
Why need sooo much money?
And is this some stupid website asking people to donate and so-called claim they are doing some thing to help?

Plus.. it's an international firm he quoted..

The more I thought after I left the first comment, the more absurd I felt about 20k-30k MYR for the P.I
And also there was one girl who actually researched and found that P.I charges is around 5k MYR
So.. why is their quotation so high?

lol..thats is a truly superb post! i applaud you! i was also commenting on the same page and repeatedly had my comments deleted, then i was verbally abused and then deleted from the group! What Andrew and his team were doing is HIGHLY suspicous and also illegal! Some friends of mine that were also concerned contacted the spca (as andrew said he was working closely with them) and they denied any involvement with them and denied that they had offered to collect funds to aid in hiring a PI. SPCA declared that they had NOT been sharing information with Andrew and visa versa! very very suspicous!!

The above post was deleted, I know coz I was following it after My Brother posted telling him that if he stops criticising and putting down Malaysians for not donating, they may actually come fort to donate more....that how students dont have C/C and CNY being round the corner $$$ is tight....
So after deleting that post, he started a new strategy....he started posting Thank You's to Malaysians who donated, see that post from My Brother gave him the idea that if he stop embarrassing malaysians and started praising them back more, it would be a better way to get more donations from Malaysians....
I am glad the PDRM finally got involve and ask him to stop the collections, I too was suspicious, what?...why International PI comp?....aint a local PI comp much more effective as they will know the area much more?...and article i read also previously about PI....cost for hiring them was 10-15K.....so his amount was huge...maybe PI half Andrew team half??...who knows....but glad it's being put to stop now...and now reading what u have written I am glad this all has come to a STOP!!.....

ReplyDeleteI would suggest you're reading, way, way too much in to the word 'we'. People can use the word when they feel like they are part of something. In fact if you read the comment you quoted carefully I would say it's clear 'we' was used in this context of some who feels they are part of something. As for:

Well that's the point. They could have but they said they weren't going to. Whether RM900 is seen as generous or not is likely to depend on the individual although I would note it is ~3.5x the original donation amount RM250, 9x the second RM100 and 18x the third RM50.
BTW Andrew himself originally provided the figure or ~RM7000 (can't remember the precise number) but didn't promote it much then later said they needed more because of the complexity of the case (allegedly involving drug addicts) and their desire to hire a high quality PI team.
I do agree that whether he was ever planning to actually hire a PI, the donation issue was very poorly managed. On the other hand, I don't think it would have been easy to quickly set up a system which would have allayed concerns, particularly not given the bureaucracy in Malaysia. Deleting the posts may not have helped the situation on the other hand thousands of people saying scam probably wouldn't have helped encourage donations. To put it a different way, if Andrew genuinely did want to hire a PI, he was in a 'heads you win, tails I lose' situation. It didn't help that there are so many idiots, I mean there were people who were saying the police wouldn't take the money (well actually the Malaysian police probably would if you do it discreetly but more important no one ever said the money was going to the police).
ReplyDeleteI would say personally I'm not convinced Andrew wasn't genuine in his desire to hire a PI even if it was handled very poorly. The 'free advertising' is possible (I read about him being a marketer* long ago) however I have to question whether having a lot of people thinking you're a scammer was worth it. I would note only 6000 people or so ever liked the page, of course far more were aware it doesn't necessarily mean they would remember Nikonian. And some of those who 'liked' only liked it to comment and are the ones who's convinced he's a scammer. Note that presuming his figures are accurate, he can't have got more then a few hundred people to sign up for accounts. I wouldn't exactly consider that particularly useful but I don't know anything about Andrew's business/es. The international angle seems irrelevant, no one is going to come to Malaysia to learn photography because of learning about him from this.
The claims by some he was going to keep the money but then got caught however makes little sense to me for many reasons I can't be bothered explaining.
In case you're wondering, I never donated money for several reasons including the fact I felt and still feel as unfortunate as the Sushi situation is, RM30000 is too much to spend on tracking down a couple of abusers. RM30000 could be spent much more effectively by something like the SPCA solving much more animal abuse. I never said that on the donation page because 1) I knew I would piss people off 2) I knew it would be deleted long before Andrew was making much noise about deletions
*I suspect his alleged expertise may have been one of the reasons he was criticising Malaysians. It was a risky but IMHO potentially effective strategy. We all know how much Malaysians hate to be seen as inferior particularly to Singaporeans. I wasn't exactly surprised when he praised Malaysians (in general I mean, as I've already said, Andrew had been randomly thanking people long before he was criticising Malaysians, in fact this was when he was only asking for the RM7000 or whatever before he was really pushign for donations), I'd been expecting something like that.

ReplyDeleteBTW I would disagree that there's anything wrong with his use of the word 'solely'. It can be used to refer to more then one thing although the 'also' doesn't really belong.
ReplyDeleteAlso the Malay Mail thing was several days before Andrew stopped collecting not one day. It was solely referring to the plan on Friday to visit Kepong to follow up on leads and appears to be out of concern of vigilatism to me. If you read it carefully, it didn't refer to collecting money. In fact at that stage the donation angle wasn't really being pushed at all.
Note that the 'police' there were actually just the KL CID chief SAC II who almost definitely doesn't really know what's going on with the case at all (and in fact the Malay Mail article suggests that). It's really a sort of sensationalistic journalism article, hardly surprising for the Malay Mail who have always been a bit of a tabloid. In other words, it doesn't tell us anything about the donation angle at all. In fact the lack of any discussion or mention or the donation/PI thing in later media articles is one of the reasons I doubt it was a scam (of course it could still have been an advertising campaign like the blog owner suggest)
However Andrew seemed to make fairly clear from the beginning he didn't endorse and wasn't planning any vigilatism and solely wanted to investigate leads to pass on to the police and/or any PIs they hired which was one of the reasons I felt early on they seemed a decent team. As I've already said, I personally wasn't too keen on the PI thing, genuine or not but presuming it was genuine it's his and his donors choice.
Re-reading your blog post, I should emphasise Andrew linked to the Nikonian page long before he posted:

(I know this personally because as I said earlier I saw that page when he was still asking for ~RM7000, before the RM20k-RM30k figure came up and he started seriously pushing for donations.)

Lets remember, its easy to fool people into something they are really concern about, just bringing in a topic that is triggering, in this case, "Save the poodle".
However, bashing people is wrong or deleting posts, I think they should know that better =.= they put up a page, and with all the confusions going around with this case, I think they should be smart enough to know, that many people might not believe them.
Honestly, hiring a P.I? =.= what happened telling people to get off their lazy ass and do something. PROTEST or DO SOMETHING! IT MIGHT REQUIRE SOME MONEY HOWEVER IT WONT BE AS EXPENSIVE THEN SPENDING IT ON A P.I =.= WHO WE DON'T KNOW!!!

ReplyDeleteLet's just give the team the benefit of doubt. If donors fall for their scam, so be it. Donors are the willing party. If its a scam, karmic retribution may befall on them.
But to put it in their shoes, how would you feel if someone starts bashing your well-intended efforts despite their explanations?
I myself will:
1) Fark them. Delete their posts or
2) ignore them and carry on the work with all the accusations coming in. In the end, the whole effort may fail with all these detractors coming in and accusing the whole thing as scam.
Which would u choose, JPG? Just answer truthfully.
Sometimes, its easier to suspect people than trusting them. This is human nature. If you feel its a scam, why not lead the investigation instead or volunteer ur time to investigate rather than be a keyboard warrior?
If you think your substantiation that it is a hoax is strong, you can report to the police. But do you know if all the refunds went through, what you wrote here constitutes a defamatory remark against their company? I can safely tell u some of your points you brought up are falsely interpreted from just one single biased viewpoint, but I will leave that to some other post (frankly, I gave up reading after reading the first few points raised as i realised it is full of bias... perhaps due to anger stemming from the deletion of posts?)

That's a pretty darn good advertising strategy on your part to link your blog on Andrew's page to get this many readers (which from earlier posts, is evident not many people cared about). So you can't say you didn't gained anything from this whole episode.
Besides, have you and Funeral Moon do anything about it if you have claim they are a scam? (Oh btw, Andrew just announced the refund and has got many replies of cancelled transactions). And yeah, it might not be properly managed but at least he did something (and thoroughly deserved the publicity, intended or not). Well, of course you did too... by coming up with this brilliant post! But in all seriousness, if you truly care about people getting scammed, you'd have reported Andrew to the police, which you... didn't.
I've also deduced that from the attitude you (and Funeral Moon) have regarding Andrew's intention, you must be cheated and scammed ALOT by your closest friends/families, which is probably why you constantly cast a shadow of doubt over their efforts. You must lead a lonely sad life where you can trust nobody, believing there's no more good people, even though you're always surrounded by others, don't you?
Overall, I conclude you to be as fake as the thick make up covering your ugly face. But still, I hold no grudge against you and I wish you well, get some real friends or do something about your life instead of posting self-pic of yourself.

Seems like none of all this so called kind hearted or volunteers remember it anymore.
I mean, yea… police did said that we shouldn’t conduct any private investigation on it… but bla! This doesn’t mean we should just let go this case and let these "man" do the job rite? Instead/ except of “$” ( which always will be superb sensitive topic ), we should gather public force that can create “motivation” for these officers.
(which totally no update now) Perhaps, that’s what this girl hope to see? Instead of wasting time on arguing, its lot better if we can put more afford on giving gentle reminder to the public that sushi are still WAITING for us ==!!!

Sry if I offended any1 here… just a bit disappointed when every1 seems to forget this issue. we have the same objective but using different method! so don't get lost, lets put our focus back on sushi! ReplyDeleteI merely gave my advice that posting defamatory remarks is libel in nature. And the poster has treaded on very dangerous grounds in this article.
I do agree with you that we should not be in-fighting and rather concentrate on the search. That is perhaps what the poster should be doing in the first place, I guess.
